\:50g Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
{ `> x"Y5 Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of

%LyB~X X+iULr.^`~ Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
Sk- Ti\ polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
:([,vO: jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
k95vgn% intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
2B#WWb underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
+x` tvo as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
pR $c<p bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
kDrGl{U} Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to

Ug jH its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
,F1$Of/'@\ accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
W\Gg!XsLk mineral water.
C]k\GlhB Y\rKw!u_! The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
4 P.ry|2 truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
#(7OvW+y laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
`hbM 2cM and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
W uQdz&s> younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
XjV7Ew^7 and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
giPyo"SD Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
(Lc%G~{ If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
%c&h:7); seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
}\9qN! ol Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
S_) va#b# If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
'RPe5 vB be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
RxAZ<8T_ heartbreak.

T vY*D, 1"i/*}M The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
"zv?qS themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
V4_ZBeWA lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
|SCO9,Fs than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so

>@Q but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
VTS8IXz kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
|%Pd*y ZA his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
Db@$' doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of

+]l6 icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
]U82A**n in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.

b Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
wX[g\,?}' polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
h_n`E7&bG affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
MDAJ
p>o your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
l]C#bL>i comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
h8'`g 0 his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
d0YDNP%,_ of fire and even some unpredictability would have been

'gU welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
x}B3h9] espresso kind of guy.
