pO3SUOP Kn;"R: Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
I-(zaqp@ Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
SZ'R59Ee< his little pop masterpieces.
3,qr-g|;jM ;$wVu|& Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
!?h;wR polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
^k">A:E2 jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
#h
]g?*}OJ intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
Y]2A&0
underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
qfm|@v|De5 as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
K?1W! fY bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
/7F:T[ Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
_Q 4)X)F its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
xY(*.T
9K accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
%l[( Iw mineral water.
@K !T,U
Aw.qK9I The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
&B1Wt W truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
bK&+5t& laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
g: 8h|w) and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
HQhM'x younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
OA;XiR$xP and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
Ai 3*QX Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
I,vJbvvl! If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
]GkfEh7/J seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
"@0]G<H
Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
+iRh If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
ENs&RZ; be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
t-bB>q#3> heartbreak.
UySZbmP48 7 ~.9=I'A The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
V {ddr:]4 themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
Dp-z[]} )1 lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
]Q)OL than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
F{;((VboN but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
+V OK%8,p kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
BUX pC xQ his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
c 3)jccWTc doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
R!gEwTk
icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
)1`0PJoHE in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
j' "J%e] HY:o+ciH' Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
}00BllJ polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
cI OlhX@ affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
Z,Dl` w your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
M!D3 }JRm comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
Y&Z.2 >b his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
GH$ pKB of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
bP&]!jZ welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
S3 Xl espresso kind of guy.
