wRLkO/Fw Kj'm<]u Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
Gb8LW,$IT- Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
e[{LNM{/# his little pop masterpieces.
C\}m_`MR ty7a&>G Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
)iEK7d^- polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
.4?M.Z4[ jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
we{*%8I; intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
q>H!?zi\Hy underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
U);
,Opr as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
N|Rlb5\ bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
O9g{XhMv>f Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
(:@qn+
a its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
v&uIxFCR accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
JRl8S mineral water.
ayC*
n' v[HxO?x^ The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
OlV>zam truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
N%>/
e'( laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
La3f{;|u5M and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
PJb_QL!9 younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
85nUR[)h and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
@^`f~0#: Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
J7mT&U&Ru If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
2t[inzn=E seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
|F6C&GNYT Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
Pyk~V)~M If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
ku`'w;5jT be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
~~kIA"U heartbreak.

The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
YBg\L$|n themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
^hZwm8G lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
KWXJ[#E<W than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
GDOaZi but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
%_A1WC kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
[0_Kz"| his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
=.tsz.:c doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
9}3W0F; icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
/$ L;m in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
1!=$3]l0Lj 'v\!}6 Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
Sgr<z d'b polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
&Vl,
x/ affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
y
?Q"-o ( your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
+F 5 Dc comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
(<1DPpy95O his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
{|>~#a49h of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
12cfqIo9 welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
1w\Y._jK espresso kind of guy.
