1#6emMV.` ZI! : Kris Anaya and his AN ANGLE band will never be able to escape the BRIGHT EYES comparisons, but I say hell with that...the poor guy has written a pretty good album in The Truth Is That You Are Alive, his third offering for Drive-Thru Records. While Anaya's wordplay and singing style is still very Oberst-like, there is no doubting his growth as a musician since 2004's ...And Take It With A Grain Of Salt. The songs on Alive are tighter than ever, contain out-of-the-ordinary instruments that actually have a purpose, and are sequenced in a pleasing manner. While a majority of Anaya's songs are based in stripped-down folk (see "Going To Heaven"), he manages to pull off a number of new tricks. "Child In Me" has an array of vocalists singing above an incredibly steady beat that's reminiscent of a more folky version of THE ARCADE FIRE's "Keep The Car Running," "I'm Alright" is a happy-go-lucky alt-country tune in the vein of LIMBECK's best work, and "C'mon C'mon" is perhaps the best song on the album as it's an absolutely killer rhythm and blues song. While there are a few dull moments to be heard on Alive, the record is largely a success and easily AN ANGLE's best work yet.
