0* Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
TC J\@|yw polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
e|]g ?! jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
Z1OX9]##r intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
-XD\,y%zi underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
M.H4 ud as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
DH m$gk bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
Vv6xVX Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
S.M< ( its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
!tX14 O~B- accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
U3A >#EV mineral water.
d p_J*8 q;Qpd]H The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
$c f?`k truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
?CM,k0 laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
Tcr&{S &o and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
P,tN
;c younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
o3}12i S and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
~5]AXi'e~ Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
VJuPC If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
b\H(Lq17 seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
V}@c5)(j Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
H$\?D+xlf If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
QIo|t!7F be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of

{^n<\Jh The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
@yobT,DXi themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant

n lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
0Wv9K~F than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
LhV4 ^\+ but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
+$8hTi, kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
Omh(UHZBB his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
6o{anHBB doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of

icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
~){*X Jw6 in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.

w8@ Ok_fj affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
aY"qEH7] your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
9l(e: _`_ comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
[KCh,'& his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
k*^.-v of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
9 h L Po welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
'6K Wob Xm espresso kind of guy.
