v, HR'r~ #j Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
!ndc
<], Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
*#j+,q!X his little pop masterpieces.
;I'pC?!y AL/`Pqlk Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
EUdu"'=4a polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
7+aTrE{ jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
"rz|sbj intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
n8"S;:Zm underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
Va"_.8n|+ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
H27J kZ& bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
zuOx@T^ Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
?' H);ou-p its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
/kGRN@ accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
pyK|z
vr-r mineral water.
ua(y! Im &_
er_V~ The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
*JXiOs truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
8ID
fYJ laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
0*^)n&O and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
SJ1
1LF3) younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
gvYib`# and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
{t: ZM
UV Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
C)>
])'S If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
gBRhO^Sz seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
)f4D2c&VE Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
{N+
N4* If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
F,#)8>O be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
Yo:l@( heartbreak.
8:,E=swe -A}*Aa'\ The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
P/._ tQu6 themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
y|!%C-P lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
Xui${UYN than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
gkS#=bv9e@ but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
yTw0\yiO kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
Mn+;3qo{6 his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
yvo~'k#c doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
'01H
8er icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
|i-Q fpn in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
xKKL4ws 2A@9jl s Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
{O*<1v9< polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
*zX*k7LnV affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
D"fE )@Q@Y your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
WlP
#L` comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
MP, l*wVd his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
rAD5n,M] of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
QLo^6S5! welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
W5*%n]s~ espresso kind of guy.
