RV_(T+ polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
S|K#lL jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
dSP~R intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
G~+BO'U9'G underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
}x~1w:z Hd as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
6 3NhD bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
m~f J_ Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
>WZ_) `R its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
f(*ygI accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
fxOa(mt mineral water.
2uE vu v<AFcY The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
J1\H^gyW) truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
C f(g laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
/QW-#K|S& and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
~lQ<#*wl younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
| y%M";MI and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to

S\bAF Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
l h]Q\ If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
v;ZIqn " seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
{aoG60N Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
xgQ&'&7l If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
5*hA6Ex7 be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
;%<R>gDWv heartbreak.
+?%L X4Y tj1M1s|a The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
0_f6Qrc j themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
,3,(/%=k lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
%NH{%K, than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
-L6V)aK& but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
Z1Pdnc7S[ kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
[rO TWN his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
*>,# 'C2 doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of

r*W icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
8`Iz%rw&(J in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
JBMJR }1BpIqee Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too

"^ polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
2_C&p6VGj affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
vwIP8z~< your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
"~,3gNTzV comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
qZB}}pM# his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
&fRZaq'2R of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
u}(K3H3 welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
Z[%vO?, espresso kind of guy.
