"bjbJC&T (ubK
i[) Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
A_6Dol=J@ Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
/#xYy^` his little pop masterpieces.
lFgE{;z@ O#U
_mgfzJ Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
?H!X
p polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
t6+>Zr jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
:~,akX$ intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
ZQJh5.B
underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
Lr>4~1:` as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
{
lZ<'p bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
1T3YFt@&I Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
XoiZ"zE its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
0ENqK2 accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
A kqGk5e
^ mineral water.
#|e5i9l*B 1Imb"E The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
0*u X2* truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
JDMsco+j5 laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
Od]wh and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
c$3ZEe younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
Y9(BxDP_+Y and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
ewinG-hX_ Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
*-_joAWTG If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
IG@@CH seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
(b1rd Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
=u&NdMy If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
W!Rr_'yFe) be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
7.v{ =UP heartbreak.
~H gN'#Y? `VOLw*Ci The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
]JHY(
H2| themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
VzFzVeJ lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
dU"C=c(w\ than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
_k
W:FB but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
z;i4F.p kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
x\(yjNZH his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
TGPHjSZ1 doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
\cq.M/p icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
q/YO5>s15 in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
=0mGfTc Tb]' b Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
Rv+p4RgA polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
[k6,!e[/uG affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
x6*.zo5e your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
9\NP)Vm$^ comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit

O
his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
#9hSo of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
3qH`zYgh welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
qS2]|7q?Tc espresso kind of guy.
