1a Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all

nwO;> Qr jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
KwpNS (]I intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
7sHtJr underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
{ wA@5+[ as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
;'= !Fv bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
K})j5CJ/ Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
{y spNyOx its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
Vfc 9 +T+ accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
{d^&$
~ mineral water.
%v}:#_va] b%|%Rek8 The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
8V~w3ssz truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
XPWK"t0 1 laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
9RR1$( f and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
~^Vt)/} Q younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
HnOp*FP and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
''f Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.
A:NsDEt If Bluesbunny closes his eyes, on "Mystery Star" Ally Kerr
7cvbYP\<lv seems to transform himself into Edinburgh master popsters
sVh!5fby& Dropkick and there are certainly worse things to be than that.
kFuaLEJi If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
B;G|2um:$ be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of
oleRQ= heartbreak.
LX*T<|c`' 8a -[Q The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
A!iV iX &y themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
C7q bofo V lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
of{wZU\J+9 than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
8?I(wn but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
Q&n kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
/!7m@P|&D his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
nM}X1^PiK" doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
#C !8a icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
{u9VHAXC f in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
V 3I&0P k O a-Z eCq Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
9"MC< polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your
. 1?AU 6\ affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
WOgbz&S?J your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
v\\Z[,dK comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
9LCV"xgX his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit

t of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
-V4@BKI8 welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
