The New Orleans native might just be one of the freshest artists to hit the Christian music scene in the past year and Real, the debut's title, serves as evidence that Smith is just that. From the intro of "Get Up" to the aptly titled "Outro", Real not only showcases the immense talents of Smith but lays an impressive groundwork for future efforts to branch off. The key? A soul-tinged, silky-smooth delivery that completely obeys the laws of pop convention to maintain accessibility and originality within the same song structures. "Get Up" is a clap-along funk-pop opener that features Smith doing his best Jason Mraz impression.

"What I Plan To Do" finds Smith getting down to his jazzy roots, turning in a soulful piano solo performance complete with brass that almost turns a circus-like sound into one of the best tracks on the album. "Breakdown" offers more typical pop fare for those who long for the standard radio sound, but Smith still delivers even when avoiding his New Orleans background.

"Can't Save Your Soul" and "Make Me Move" bring a groove that Barnes featured so well on Chasing Mississippi. Comparisons to Mayer are found throughout with a musicianship that rises above the norm, featuring a singer/songwriter type who is clearly in a class by himself. Just as Mayer is a musician's musician who uses the pop charts to showcase his immense talents, Smith largely stands the same way on the piano.
