Glasgow's Ally Kerr does a nice line in pop songs and "Off the
D`V03}\- Radar" provides us with the opportunity to enjoy 12 more of
^g"G1,[%w his little pop masterpieces.
4,`Yx s)% vg5i+ry< Opening the album is "Could Have Been a Contender" - all
K]1A,Q polished pop perfection that brings back memories of the
Lp.,:z7 jaunty hits of the Housemartins and their catalogue of
TkM8GK-3 intelligent and catchy songs. "I Think I'm Bleeding" has an
c R*D)'/tl underlying country flavour to it. Whilst once again presented
%@Bl,!BJ, as a happy little song, there is more than a touch of
sFsp `kf bitterness in his words. Funnily enough, the rather twee "The
<}&n }|! Toothbrush Song" would also make a quality country song due to
r8 A
its dry lyrics even if a cowboy would feel the need to
7LbBS:@3z_ accompany such emotions with bourbon rather than sparkling
eF823cH2x_ mineral water.
* 0^!%Y'/4 olB?"M=H The pace picks up with the title track "Off the Radar" that
. K s%ar truly highlights Mr Kerr's pop sensibilities and offsets his
4"nb>tA laidback vocal delivery with some spirited guitar. Loves lost
p Wa'Fd and won (mostly lost though? and a sense of reflection on his
E3@G^Y younger years seem a common theme to the songs in this album
^~'tQ}]!" and, indeed, regret is once more evident in "Is It Too Late to
2v\,sHw+- Work for NASA" even if it is disguised here with wry humour.

0JN>w^ If Bluesbunny had to pick a favourite track, it would probably
G>& Ta p> be "Amorino" evoking, as it does, the melancholic pleasures of

'[Ap/:/UY 1t w>C\ The thing that impresses most about this album is the songs
roSdcQTeT themselves. Well crafted and melodic with sharp and observant
z~\ a]MB lyrics, they are however presented as a whole lot fluffier
Z?ZiK1) K than they actually are. It must be Ally Kerr's choice to do so
Up*1j:_O but it does seem that he is deliberately avoiding giving any
ND $m|V-C kind of offense. Maybe he never gets angry himself - although
I]+xerVd his words suggest otherwise -but Bluesbunny feels that he is
Wn6~x2 LaV doing his own songs a disservice here by sprinkling an inch of
<&^P1x<x icing sugar on everything. It is not necessary for everything
ZfsM($|a in life to have a cherry on top for it to be appetising.
7}>Zq`]~ jeXP|;#Una Overall, this is a happy, upbeat album that is just a bit too
C,r[ H5G# polite and well mannered to try and force itself upon your

n& affections. The production and arrangements are smoother than
6Lj= %& your average Starbuck's decaf latte but it is perhaps fair
W}{RJWr comment to say that the omnipresent sugar coating will suit
}t JR Bb his fans. However, and maybe this is a reviewer thing, a bit
n,/eT,48` of fire and even some unpredictability would have been
5#|D1A welcome. Then again, the Bluesbunny was always a quadruple
X$Eg(^L a espresso kind of guy.
