Just as the title promises, Rocket Uppercut's debut album 'This Beautiful Tragedy' oscillates between the edges. Most of the twelve songs are representative examples for Rocket Uppercut's individual style of music, which they.ve chosen to call "Indie-Noise Rock" - a mixture of melody and shouting, borrowings from pop and psychedelic music. They feel free to blend different genres, but are always careful to cling to their own style. Rocket Uppercut's sound does not follow a specific master plan, but it takes a new and fresh shape in each of their songs. Some songs offer you a few minutes of repose and sweetness, charming melodies and catchy sing-along tunes, but most of the other songs are tight, noisy and pushing stompers. They do not experiment with freaky instrumentation, but rely on the straightness and power of guitars, bass, drums and organ. Singer Bianca Haslbeck's voice ranges from warm to tight, from howling to embracing. Never too dramatic, never marble ?musically and emotionally, she always hits the right tone. Together with her lyrics, she conveys her feelings right to the point and tells the listener about her experiences, hopes and disappointments as a young adult. Maybe it's due to him being so young of age and unprepossessed by pretentious expectations, guitarist Kevin Ippisch (being 17 at the time of the recording) contributes a fireworks of riffs which are so gripping and appealing that you think you've heard them before. Rhythmically concise and sharp, they are the basis of each song and do not only usurp your aural attention, but will soon make your feet tap wildly.
HI)MBrj;r t[* ;v The vocals and the riffs are embedded into a vigorous, impelling fundament of bass and drums, at places fleshed out and boosted by the use of an old-fashioned organ. Listening to the "Sonics" song "Cinderella", they found the track to be perfect as a reminiscential example for their musical roots, so it consummately fits into the album concept. To support the band's idea of straightforward, plain rock sounds, the producers refrained from squiggling it with artificial gadgets, but focussed on retaining the natural and rough impression of Rocket Uppercut. So fasten your seat belts ?a rocket uppercut will hit you!
